In March of 2021, Mario Trejo became one of the new talents in Mountain Bike cycling (MTB).
The difference between road cycling and MTB racing is while both require skill and stamina, mountain biking cycling, offers competitors a more challenging terrain and other natural obstacles like rugged trails and not the smooth, obstacle-free roads that high-speed, endurance cycling athletes enjoy during long rides.
At the MTB Hidalgo Federation Cup of March 2021, Mario Trejo, at the time only 8 years of age, earned a 3rd place bronze medal while representing Cabo San Lucas, BCS. ”Inside that little knight there is a champion who is beginning to emerge,” said Yessi Moreno, a local CSL cycling enthusiast.
A year later, Mario returned to the award-winning podium as one of the best young cyclists in the country. This time another 3rd place bronze medal at the National Children’s Cycling Championship. In that race, young Mario led the competition, for practically the entire 4.5 KM (2.7 miles) ending in a close finish. The course was held on the grounds of “El Chamizal” Federal Public Park within the high-altitude area of the nation’s capital. Another Los Cabos local youngster, 10-year-old Jesús Sandez, also finished 3rd in his age category competition. Elías Sánchez was a 3rd cyclist from Baja California Sur, now becoming a power in cycling at the national level.
Then on July 2nd, 2023, at the “Junior Bike Grand Prix 2023” which took place in San Luis Potosi, young Super Mario swept the event which qualifying him for an international event in Holland. The little champion participated in the 9–10-year-old category of the race, where he demonstrated his skill and passion for this sport.
During three days of the competition, he stood out by taking first place as he earned his ticket to the European Junior Cycling Tour in Assen, Holland. The opportunity to compete abroad was that once-in-a-lifetime event for the young cyclist. Something he earned with his confidence, hard work, talent and potential.
Now 11 years old, Mario, representing the Java Start Junior team, won his age division at the prestigious Grimminge Koers in Belgium. The victory, after a series of triumphs in national and international competitions that began when he was 8 years old, solidifies him as one of the best athletes in the world in his age category. The Grimminge Koers race is known for its challenging course, and young Super Mario has now become known to the entire planet. His achievement in Belgium reinforces his career and is a source of pride for the community in Los Cabos and for all of Mexico that has its eyes on the little boy waiting and training hungrily for more success. With Mountain biking becoming an Olympic event for men and women at the 1996 Olympic Games maybe one day we will be able to cheer on young Super Mario Trejo, who hopefully will one day be an Olympian.
