The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana is pleased to announce the arrival of Christopher Teal, the new U.S. Consul General in Tijuana, effective August 5, 2024.
Teal will serve in Tijuana for three years with jurisdiction over Baja California and Baja California Sur.
Teal is a career diplomat with the U.S. Department of State. Before his assignment as Consul General in Tijuana, Teal was the Director of Human Resources-Assignments and Professional Development Division of the Department of State.
He led a 35-member team overseeing global diplomatic assignments for mid-level Foreign Service officers.
During his 25-year career, Teal held several senior positions abroad, including Consul General at the U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Mexico, Public Affairs positions in Sri Lanka; Guadalajara, Mexico; Peru; and the Dominican Republic. In Washington, D.C., he also worked at the European Office and the Foreign Press Center.
Teal also held several senior academic positions in Washington, D.C., including as a visiting professor at George Washington University, where he taught classes on foreign policy and diplomacy. He was also a professor at the Inter-American Defense College, teaching graduate classes to high-level Latin American officials.
Before joining the Foreign Service, Teal worked with award-winning journalist Juan Williams on his biography Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary about the former U.S. Supreme Court Justice. His biography of Ebenezer Bassett, titled Hero of Hispaniola, was published in 2008. He also directed, wrote, and produced a documentary about the first African-American diplomat, Ebenezer D. Bassett. The film, A Diplomat of Consequence, tells the story of this groundbreaking diplomat 150 years after his appointment.
Christopher Teal holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree from George Washington University.
