Since hurricane Norma hit La Paz in the summer of last year, several boats sunk in the bay. The Mar Libre association has since been devoted to salvaging them to avoid pollution of the La Paz waters, but they need help to continue doing so.
Here are photos of 3 boats that hit Rock Bottom. The first was owned by a man named, Tim, who collected all manner of things on his boat but unfortunately died before he had a chance to clean it up or give it away.
Fortunately, the volunteers of Mar Libre, over 4 days of nasty work, removed more than 8 tons of trash and 2 tons of recyclables from Tim’s boat before it ended up washing ashore a few months later. That boat was named “Rock Bottom” and al that trash would have ended up in the bay had they not removed it.
The next derelict ship is called “Go For Broke” and Steve, the owner, apparently takes that name as a personal challenge. The boat is still in the bay polluting the marine food chain.
The last boat is owned by a man the locals called “Loco Mike,” because he would shoot pellet guns and arrows at passing boats, and even the police, until he got arrested.
Loco Mike´s derelict boat is called “Disperser” and she is currently dispersing contamination in our bay. The Mar Libre association plans to make trips out to these last 2 boats, whose owners are still alive, and remove what is possible before the next Hurricane hits La Paz.
