Major Road Improvements Start Next Week. The state government’s infrastructure secretariat announced that the construction of a new bridge at Santa Cruz, at the entrance to the road to La Ribera, will begin this coming week. This road usually floods during a summer storm, leaving La Ribera incommunicado. Now that La Ribera is becoming the site for new, ultra-luxury resorts, that’s a no-no. Then 15+ miles of the road from Tortugas Bay to Punta Eugenia in the Mulege municipality will be modernized this coming week too.

Our reps will hold over 450 business meetings with participants from Japan, South Korea, India and European countries. During the event, Mexico’s consul in Frankfurt will announce the new Condor Air direct flight to Los Cabos, which will begin on November 3 with 2 flights a week until April 2025. Hoooray!
Buildings Construction Permit Revoked in La Paz. TheDistrito Malecón project, which aimed to build two 7-storey apartments and commercial space buildings on the malecón in La Paz was revoked by a District Court for lack of information on the impact that it would have on the community. Once finished, with 89 apartments, commercial spaces and an estimated 280 inhabitants, the project would consume over 22,000 gallons of water a day, something that La Paz cannot afford. Thank you, Judge!
Another Construction Stalled by the Feds. A permit for the construction of a new 4,279-foot-long marina in front of the malecón in La Paz was denied by Mexico’s environmental secretariat (Semarnat). The reason, stated Semarnat, is that the interested party did not hold public audiences so that the organized citizens could learn and give their opinion of the project, as it affects the general look of the area. The project might try to comply and apply again. Stay tuned.
Private Aircraft Arrivals Increasing Again. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of wealthy tourists arriving in private jets increased dramatically, to the point that the San Jose International Airport expanded its FBO facilities. Then by June last year, the number of private aircraft began decreasing, only to increase again in the first quarter of this year. Welcome!
Mexico’s Direct Foreign Investment Breaks Record. The first quarter of 2024 brought in $20.3 million dollars to Mexico, a figure 9 percent higher than that in the same period of 2023, said Mexico’s Economy secretariat. Half of that money came from the U.S., followed by Germany ($1.74 million), Canada ($1.7 million) and Japan ($1.43 million). An impressive 97 percent of the investment was a re-investment of profits, quite a surprise that reflects the confidence in Mexico.
Southern Baja Leads the Country. A report released by the Mexican Institute for Competitivity (IMCO) states that Baja California Sur is the state with the highest salaries and the most competitive when it comes to talent and investment. The average monthly salary is 14,718 pesos (about $883 USD at the current rate of exchange), above those of the state of Nuevo Leon $752 USD and Mexico City at $751 USD. In comparison, states in southern Mexico, like Chiapas, have the lowest salaries at $370 USD per month. Yikes!
