Cabo San Lucas
Week 21 began with 5 to 6-foot waves driven by 8 to 10 kts. of wind. Both the sea and air temps were in the mid-60s to high-70s, which seemed to offer perfect conditions for a variety of species, including Wahoo, Dorado, Roosterfish, Jack Crevalle, Yellowtail, Silky Shark, and Striped Marlin – the marlin were all released.
Kirk Kolb, Michael Balaban, Michael Laytos, Mitchell Ellman, and Patrick Mostyn fishing aboard the “YAHOO,” a beautifully maintained, 42-foot Bertram with Captain Ricardo Escamilla and Mate Yahoo Jose Escamilla-Yahoo had an exciting day on the water catching and releasing five Striped Marlin in the 80 to 100-pound class using Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot that also produced two Silky Shark weighing around 100 to 120 pounds.
Late in the day, adding more variety to the day’s catch with a much sought-after toothy, 35-pound Wahoo with live caballito.
By the time they finally returned to the Marina, they had also caught several Jack Crevalle weighing up to 15 pounds on small baitfish.
Throughout the week, the Cabo bite remained steady, and one client, Bruce Smith, decided he would fish alone aboard the “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram with Captain Beto Lira and Mate Jesus Romero to have some fun. Bruce had quite a day for himself. It provided him with many tales to tell and retell again. All day, he didn’t have long between bites! Three times, Striped Marlin rose to the trolled fresh bait on the reliable 1150 Spot, and Smith was fighting and releasing yet another marlin. However, that wasn’t the only species of hungry fish in the ocean! There were also a few Jack Crevalle that beat the marlin to a Ballyhoo.
Trevor and Regina Oldroyd, from Washington, Utah, will remember their trip aboard the “KARINA,” a snazzy, 30-foot Bertram with Captain Orlando Murillo at the helm and Mate Jorge Velez in the cockpit, also headed for the 1150 Spot, which continued to be the hot spot for most of the week. Once again, it delivered multiple Striped Marlin (caught and released) – SEVEN to be exact, along with a couple of Silky Shark they had to deal with.
Brad Edwards, David Vernon, Justin Boe, Landon Dutra, Robert Perks, Ryan Edwards, and Tyler Benson aboard the “FRIDAY BANK,” a 66-foot Viking with Captain Alex and mates Saul and Beto also visited the now famous 1150 Spot, and were rewarded with Five Striped Marlin weighing from 100 to 120 pounds, all released. Plus, they caught One Dorado and 13 Yellowfin Tuna.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
More visiting families are here as some schools are off for summer break. Many families are taking advantage of the nice weather in May/June as the upcoming months tend to be extremely hot and humid.
The main target recently has been wahoo. Surprisingly, though, most wahoo were caught later in the day, as only a few were picked up first thing in the morning; according to multiple reports, most of the bites came after 10 am. A few lucky anglers landed three in a day and lost a few more hooked. Most of these fish averaged 20 to 35 pounds, though we had a handful in the 40-pound class. Most of the action came from fast-trolling rigged Ballyhoo. A few wahoo were landed on the XRaps and Nomad DTXs. The best area for wahoo was the grounds from La Fortuna to Cardon, with most caught at the 25 Spot. The biggest wahoo caught this week was a 76-pounder caught at the Outer Gordo while looking for marlin with rigged Ballyhoo.
The yellowfin tuna bite is now extremely slow, and you are lucky if you get one bite a day. We only saw a handful of tuna this week, though these were quality fish, most averaging 60 to 80 pounds. It has been hard to efficiently target these yellowfin as the needlefish are a nuisance on most days. The few tuna that we saw were taken on live and dead sardina.
We have an excellent striped marlin bite 15-20 miles from our Marina. Many boats have been spotting marlin schools throughout both Gordo’s. There is a good chance of landing a few nice fish on different lures and Ballyhoo.
Closer to shore, we continue to catch good numbers of yellow snapper, amberjack, and grouper around the Rock Structure. A few reports indicate that Palmilla Point has produced the best action. Cardon is one of the favorite spots.
We are catching and releasing some nice Roosterfish on live sardina and mullet along our shoreline. The best action came from La Laguna as one of our boats caught and released nine throughout one morning while losing a few more. They also landed some small dorado and big jacks. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson
East Cape
The weather has been great, with the air temperature in the high 88 to 92-degree range. Good weather and good fishing have been the story for May!! The ever-welcome sardina arrived in big schools along the beaches, and the roosterfish, dorado, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, and striped marlin are spread all over the local banks.
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay
WEATHER: Days are sunny in the high 90s and getting warmer. Nights are in the 70s, but it’s still very comfortable because there is no humidity.
WATER: The water is getting bluer, but it’s not as warm as expected since all the yellowtail and other cold-water species are still being caught. But you can tell it’s getting warmer as more warm-water species have begun to show.
FISH HOOKED THIS WEEK: Quite a lineup!
Dorado, yellowtail, amberjack, rainbow runners, marlin, tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, yellow snapper, pargo liso, pargo mulato, cabrilla, white bonito, skipjack, sierra, triggerfish!
Note: More variety fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. Mostly nice yellowtail and a few dorado, with our La Paz fleet. …Jonathan Roldan, Tailhunter Sportfishing
