Exciting news from Costa Palmas in La Ribera, East Cape! The environmental department reported an extraordinary visitor yesterday—a leatherback sea turtle, the giant among sea turtles, made a grand appearance on the beach. While it left behind a huge track on the sand, it seems the turtle wasn’t quite ready to lay her eggs.
Leatherback sea turtles are under protection due to their status of being extremely endangered. It’s a rare and special event whenever they choose our shores for their nesting. Jose Isau, who discovered the impressive track, is no stranger to these magnificent creatures. Thanks to a scholarship that took him to Costa Rica for training, he’s now regarded as an expert by the World Wildlife Foundation in protecting leatherbacks.
The anticipation is building in the community, as it’s expected that this majestic leatherback will return to lay her eggs soon. It’s a reminder of the beauty and fragility of nature that surrounds us. Keep your eyes peeled and stay tuned for updates. Who knows? We might witness the beginning of a new generation of leatherbacks right here at Costa Palmas.
