Underpass in San Jose Roundabout Approved. The first steps to build an underpass at the troubled Fonatur roundabout are being taken. The city reports that 60,000 vehicles drive by every day and an initial study has been delivered to the feds. Early next month, both the city and the feds will work on funding the project, which could be finished by the end of 2024. Stay tuned.
Expansion of Toll Booths Approved. Manuel Anaya, spokesman for the Infrastructure, Communications and Transport secretariat, announced that within the next year, the number of toll booths near the San Jose airport will increase from 3 to 8. Work has begun and should not take that long. The advanced payment system and chips will also be improved. Hoooray!

American Activist Paddleboards 1,000 Miles. Sean Jansen, who has participated in efforts to protect the Marine Vaquita, paddleboarded from San Felipe in Northern Baja to La Paz, in a trip to raise awareness about vaquitas, an endangered porpoise. It is the smallest and most endangered porpoise on Earth, with scientists saying there are likely only 10 vaquitas left on Earth. Their extinction is virtually assured without bold, immediate action. Art Exposition Opens in La Paz. Mexican artist Oliver Martínez presents for the first time the series “Ventanas” made during his residency in Todos Santos in 2022. Inspired by the sounds and textures of the landscape of Baja California Sur, the series seeks to allow the viewer to be able to look through these windows as if it were a journey into the artist’s interior. The exhibition is made up of more than fifty pieces including paintings, bronzes, sketches and sand sculptures. In addition, Oliver will be making a series of sculptures on the beach of the boardwalk near the kiosk during November and December as a way to bring his creative process closer to the public and celebrate thirteen years of his artistic career. Thousands of Trees to Be Planted.The city of La Paz received 1,000 trees to plant in different parks around the city. They were a donation from the Pro Forestal civil organization, and 9,000 more trees will be delivered throughout 2024. La Paz used to be full of trees, hopefully, we will have more of them in the future.
Los Cabos Gets Another Award. This time, from the Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards. During the 21st edition of the yearly event held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Los Cabos was recognized as “The Best Mexico Destination.” Congratulations to all of us!
Number of Private Flights Increasing.As we reported last year, the increase of private and semi-private flights to Los Cabos has been increasing steadily. Now, the Los Cabos Tourism Fund is reporting that the largest increase is taking place at the Cabo San Lucas airport. Nearly 100,000 private aircraft have landed in Los Cabos, with 30% of them landing in Cabo San Lucas.
New Las Vegas-Los Cabos Flight Beats It! Alaska Airlines’ newest flight to the San Jose del Cabo International Airport from Las Vegas arrived Friday and was welcomed with the traditional shower from the airport’s firetrucks. The airline is reporting that their new flight is almost sold out from January through March, so hurry up and book your trip!

Los Cabos Signs Agreement with Southern Neighbors. The Los Cabos government has signed an agreement with the government of the city of Antigua, Guatemala, at an official ceremony in San Jose del Cabo. Both government officials will exchange Tourist Attention experiences, as well as educational programs in trash management, ecology and more.
How Did We Go from Crazy to Crazier? The Home Depot group is planning to build a store in San Jose del Cabo. That would be good for San Jose residents, but the location is a crazy choice: The Fonatur roundabout. Yes, you read that right. That is probably the most troubled vehicle traffic area in San Jose del Cabo and everyone and their dogs are opposing it, including the powerful Los Cabos Coordinating Council business group (CCC). Julio Castillo, Executive President of the CCC, has voiced the group’s serious concern about the pending authorization from the City government.

Government Will Build Homes to Save Lives. The National head of DIF, the government-run charity organization, and our state Governor agreed to build 500 small homes to relocate the same number of families that live in high-risk areas like dry river beds. 300 of the homes will be paid for by the DD, while another 200 will be paid for by the Los Cabos Business Association, known as the CCC.
City Government Delivers New Water Piping.The La Ballena neighborhood near the San Jose International Airport is now receiving potable water from the water supply company. This barrio was formed by squatters years back. The city legalized the land by selling it to the squatters at a low price and is now coming up with the proper utilities. The first one was electricity, now water and sometime later, sewage. The new water pumping service, of which 45% was paid by the federal government, benefits over 24,000 residents.
Forbes Names Best Los Cabos All-Inclusive Resorts. “Choosing an all-inclusive is not an easy decision,” says the magazine, and we do agree with that. Their top pick is the Marquis Los Cabos, followed by the Riu Palace – for the variety of children’s activities, and the super luxurious Grand Velas and Le Blanc. A New Fire Station to Open in La Paz. It would seem like, after many, many years of neglect, city governments around Baja California Sur are finally paying attention. Last year we saw the opening or groundbreaking of new fire stations in Santiago, Buenavista, La Ribera and additional ones in San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. Oh, Todos Santos has one too. The latest to be added to the list will be open at the populous Camino Real barrio at the southernmost entrance of La Paz. Congrats!
