Three civil organizations, Depesca, Beta Diversidad and Orgcas are pushing for the creation of a Federal Protected area covering over 47 million acres of the Sea of Cortes and the Pacific Ocean to prevent the authorization of underwater mining areas and commercial fishing.
The groups are also asking for regulations in diving or swimming with large marine species like whales, whale sharks, sharks and dolphins and have stated that they have access to private funding to make this happen.
The proposal was sent to Semarnat, Mexico’s secretariat of the environment and natural resources. The area would be restricted to sports fishing, responsible tourism and fisheries of small communities. Stay tuned.
