British beer and spirits producer Diageo will invest $500 million USD in a new tequila plant in Jalisco, beginning this year. Diageo’s new plant will hire 1,000 employees to expand its 20% market share in the country. Diageo acquired the popular Don Julio Tequila in 2015 and later bought Tequila Casamigos, the brand created by actor George Clooney and his friend and partner Rande Gerber, for $1 billion USD. Diageo continues investing in the state of Jalisco (think Guadalajara) and has started a program for female entrepreneurs. The company owns well known brands such as Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, Buchanan’s, Smirnoff, Ketel One, Captain Morgan, Bailey’s, Tanqueray, Guinness and more.
