In his first visit to Mexico, WTO’s Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, commending his leadership from the very start of the pandemic. This included ensuring that Mexico continued to welcome international flights, safely and responsibly, and providing practical assistance for businesses and workers across the broad tourism sector. Said Pololikashvili, “Mexico has led the way in supporting tourism, politically and practically, through an unprecedented crisis.” Last year during the pandemic, Mexico welcomed 24.3 million international tourists, becoming the 2nd country to receive tourists, only below Italy, which received 25.2 million during that year. In 2019, Mexico received 45.0 million travelers and was in the position number 6 of the world’s leading touristy countries.
