Did You Know Dogs Can Surf?

Maybe better than you

Have you ever seen a dog on a surfboard? How about multiple dogs on multiple surfboards? If the answer is no, you’ll get your chance at the fourth annual Dog Surf Competition, coming up on Sunday, June 25 on Cerritos Beach.

The tournament, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is a fundraiser for the dog rescue organization in Pescadero, Pescy Dogs. Pescy Dogs provides shelter, medical care and love for injured and homeless dogs in the Pescadero area (which is about 45 minutes north of Cabo, on the way to Todos Santos).

Competition is stiff for this year’s tournament, with several first and second place winners from previous tournaments on the roster. They include Cala, a six year old pooch who’s been surfing since she was two months old. She’s hit the waves in Cerritos, Todos Santos and San Jose and won first place last year. She’s seen as a top contender for this year’s event.

dogsurf.JPGAnother top contender is Koa, who lives and surfs in San Jose. Koa has a competitive edge, as his owner is a surf instructor. Rounding out the top flight is Pirata, who at 11 years is one of the older competitors, but don’t let her age fool you. She’s a determined surfer who’s a pro at snagging the good waves. She came in second place in the 2015 tournament and took home the award for best wave last year.

If you think your dog could be a contender, there’s still time to enter him or her in the competition. And if your pooch is new to surfing, no worries: you can sign up with professional dog surf trainer Perry Abedor to get your dog ready for the waves.
